Does your heart pump faster (see what we did, there?) at the thought of parallel parking? Do you avoid spaces that you have to reverse into?
In an era when larger vehicles like SUVs and Crossovers are hotter than ever, parking manoeuvres that make motorists the most nervous have been revealed by online parking portal YourParkingSpace.co.uk.
Most feared parking manoeuvres revealed
First in line was fear of parking in a tight space, followed by the dreaded-by-many a driving test student, parallel parking, followed by parking in a multi-storey car park. The latter is despite modern parking innovations being widely available, like automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) for example.
The study of 500 British motorists also found that parking next to an expensive vehicle made many drivers nervous.
Surprisingly, new technology designed to take the stress out of driving, such as rear parking cameras and sensors, did the opposite; relying on this equipment for manoeuvring and reversing came in at fifth.
Although almost one in seven motorists get nervous when parking, this means that out of those surveyed, the vast majority have no problem with it whatsoever.
Harrison Woods, managing director at YourParkingSpace.co.uk, said;
“Only a few years ago I would have suspected that parallel parking would be at the number one spot but given the UK’s love of large cars it is perhaps no surprise that parking in a tight space is the most nerve racking.
“YourParkingSpace.co.uk has previously advocated the introduction of a new parking industry standard designed to ensure that car parking spaces are large enough to accommodate modern motor vehicles. It would appear this is needed now more than ever.
“It’s somewhat alarming to find that a sizeable minority get nervous when parking, even with modern technology in many cars designed to make it less stressful.”
