Is leasing a car the same as renting?

Back to FAQs

Leasing a car and renting a car have some very similar regulations. However, the major difference between the two is the period of time that you have the vehicle for. Leasing a vehicle is usually a long-term commitment in comparison to vehicle rental. Whilst you are essentially ‘renting’ the vehicle from the leasing company, you are likely to lease the vehicle for a longer period of time, paying fixed monthly payments until the contract ends and you either buy the vehicle or hand it back to the financier.

Similar to renting though, you will not own the vehicle during the contract. The financier with be the registered owner and the registered keeper throughout the contract hire agreement.
